THEMATIC AREAS

This thematic area focuses on the design, integration, and optimization of clean and reliable energy systems. It includes renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind, hydro, and bioenergy, as well as hybrid and off-grid systems tailored to African contexts. Emphasis is placed on energy access, system efficiency, grid stability, and decentralized energy solutions to support sustainable development and industrial growth.

Sustainable Materials explores the development, selection, and application of environmentally friendly materials for energy systems and industrial processes. This includes low-carbon materials, recycling technologies, circular economy approaches, and materials for energy storage (e.g., batteries, hydrogen systems). The goal is to reduce environmental impact while improving durability, efficiency, and resource utilization.

This area addresses the regulatory, institutional, and governance frameworks that shape energy systems. It focuses on policy design, implementation, and evaluation, including renewable energy policies, energy access strategies, and regulatory reforms. The aim is to support evidence-based policymaking that promotes sustainability, affordability, and energy security across African countries.

This thematic area examines strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (mitigation) and enhance resilience to climate impacts (adaptation). It includes research on climate modeling, vulnerability assessment, low-carbon technologies, and climate-resilient infrastructure. The focus is on developing practical solutions to address climate risks in energy, agriculture, and urban systems.

This area focuses on the economic and financial dimensions of energy systems, including cost analysis, investment strategies, and market design. It covers topics such as energy pricing, project financing, public-private partnerships, and financial risk management. The goal is to support bankable energy projects and sustainable investment frameworks that drive energy transition in Africa.

The Environment thematic area addresses the interaction between energy systems and the natural environment. It includes environmental impact assessment, pollution control, resource management, and ecosystem protection. The objective is to ensure that energy development and industrial activities are conducted in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner
