The University of Rwanda is established in 2013 through the merger of seven higher education institutions, is the largest and most comprehensive public university in Rwanda, committed to academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement. Organized into six colleges with campuses across the country, UR offers diverse programs and collaborates internationally to enhance research and global partnerships, contributing to Rwanda’s development as a knowledge-based economy. Within UR’s College of Science and Technology, the African Center of Excellence in Energy for Sustainable Development (ACEESD) serves as a regional hub for research, innovation, and capacity building in sustainable energy, focusing on areas like renewable energy technologies, energy efficiency, energy policy, climate economics and financing, and climate change mitigation. ACEESD has developed specialized academic programs and research initiatives addressing the region’s unique energy and environmental challenges, training MSc and PhD students, and building capacity for a clean energy transition. ACEESD’s multidisciplinary expertise, strong industry collaborations, extensive network of research partnerships across Africa, state-of-the-art laboratories, experienced faculty, and diverse student community make it a key contributor to the Sustainable Energy & Materials, Energy Policy, Climate Change, Energy Economics, and Environment (SMECC2E) project. This aligns perfectly with the project’s goals of enhancing skills and competencies in clean energy transition and climate change across Africa through advanced training, learning mobility opportunities, and capacity-building initiatives, ultimately contributing to a sustainable, resilient, and low-carbon future for the continent.
