It is the first college and specializes in Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Law, Pure and Applied Sciences, and Engineering and Architecture. The college was merged in 1967 with Njala University College to become the University of Sierra Leone, with a federal system. This was replaced in 1972 by a unitary structure, which came to include the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM), established in 1980 to train civil servants. The third constituent college is the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMHAS), which was established in 1988. It trains doctors, pharmacists, nurses, laboratory technicians, and other allied health professionals. The University Act of 2005 disbanded the USL to exclude the Njala University College, and it became a university in its own right – Njala University. The USL would bring its expertise in the area of Energy Engineering through its MPhil and PhD programs in Energy Studies. Energy studies is an emerging interdisciplinary area devoted to finding new methods of sustainable energy production and improving the efficiency of existing systems. It addresses issues such as the social and environmental aspects of energy use, as well as the economic and scientific aspects of conventional and sustainable energy generation and use. The university has a Small-Hydro Power Technology Centre capable of addressing the energy generation, utilization and education needs of the country. The center was established at FBC with assistance from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
